The article examines the genesis of the concept of "finance" and its evolution over a long historical period. The study establishes the complexity and ambiguity of the interpretation of the modern term "public finance" among domestic scientists, which reflects, on the one hand, the historical past of the financial system of Ukraine, and on the other - a certain essential feature of this term. Attention is drawn to the fact that it is time to change the conceptual apparatus of domestic financial science, including by carrying out relevant reforms and introducing the term "public finance" into practice instead of "state finance" and consolidating it at the legislative level.
