173 Table 1. Distribution of Scientific Publications on Environmental Topics by Language Language Share of Environmental Publications (%) Major Journals / Platforms English >90% Nature Climate Change, Global Environmental Change, Env. Science & Technology Chinese ~4% Chinese Journal of Ecology, regional databases German ~2% Natur und Landschaft, national repositories Other languages ~4% Regional journals, indigenous knowledge archives Source: compiled by the author based on Scopus and Web of Science data [4; 6]. The data show a clear imbalance. English-language publications account for more than 90 percent of the total, leaving very little room for research in other languages. This means that a large amount of environmental knowledge, especially from countries where English is not widely spoken, is largely unknown to the wider international scientific community. 3. FUNCTIONS OF ENGLISH IN CLIMATE DIPLOMACY In climate diplomacy, English plays several important and closely connected roles. These can be divided into five main functions, each of which is described below and summarised in Table 2. Table 2. Principal Functions of English in Global Environmental Communication Function Description Key Example Terminological unification Standardizes concepts across linguistic communities ‗Net zero‘, ‗carbon footprint‘, ‗ecosystem services‘ Diplomatic mediation Enables cross-national negotiation and compromise COP negotiations, Paris Agreement (2015) Knowledge dissemination Transmits conservation findings globally IPCC Assessment Reports, UNEP publications Activist mobilisation Coordinates transnational environmental movements Fridays for Future, 350.org campaigns Monitoring & reporting Ensures comparability of national commitments NDCs under the Paris Agreement Source: compiled by the author.
