(Pic.2) Starting with only a photograph, Olena identified his military uniform as belonging to the Imperial Russian Army. Further archival work confirmed his service in the 136th Taganrog Infantry Regiment and his participation in the 1915 Carpathian operation. These findings provided the family with a clear historical context that had been lost for over a century. Picture 2. Olena Solovey’s great-great grandfather Omelyan Kudash Restoring Contemporary Family Bonds One of the most impactful aspects of Olena‘s work is the restoration of connections in the present. During the process, the scope of research expanded. In addition to investigating the missing ancestor, she identified a living relative - her fourth cousin Anna. (Pic.3) More than sixty years had passed since their families last maintained contact. A photograph from the 1960s documented their final meeting. (Pic.4) After that, the family lines diverged geographically and socially. As a result of this research, these connections have now been restored.
