Abstract. Bilova Ye. D. Percussion Instruments in the System of Musical Imagery: A Retrospective Analysis and Contemporary Trends. Introduction. Percussion instruments occupy a unique position in the development of musical culture, reflecting significant transformations in artistic thinking and expressive means throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The expansion of their timbral, textural, and semantic potential has contributed to the emergence of new forms of musical imagery and has substantially broadened the artistic possibilities of contemporary academic music. Beyond their traditional rhythmic and coloristic functions, percussion instruments increasingly serve as independent carriers of artistic meaning, shaping specific sonic images and symbolic associations within musical discourse. The Aim of the purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon of percussion instruments within the context of the evolution of musical thinking and the transformation of expressive means in twentieth- and twenty-first-century academic art. Particular attention is focused not only on the specific use of percussion instruments in compositional and performance practice but also on the investigation of percussion sonic imagery as an independent artistic phenomenon.
