381 The music of Vasyl Barvinsky’s «Quintet» becomes consonant with the tragedy of Hamlet’s life. «The G-moll Quintet for Two Violins, Viola, Cello and Piano» was written in the last years of the Ukrainian composer’s life. The music of this work describes the tragedies experienced in the life of this repressed artist. All three parts of the ensemble have survived to this day. But the finale remained, unfortunately, only in manuscript. Romantic features of style and colorful undertone polyphony add to the image of Hamlet a fullness of life experiences and determination. This meaningful, deep music, with rich folklore roots, reveals the dramatic subtext of the entire performance. The large-scale climax zone in the play’s dramaturgy is complicated by the polyphonic themes and textured dynamism of the music of the first part of the «Quintet». In its symphonic scope, this movement resembles the 5th variation of Barvinsky’s «Sextet».
